ABOUT NEWQUAY

Newquay was originally known as Towan Blystra, and was mostly known for being a famous fishing village. It was also a major export for the Pilchard Indusrty. When the Pilchard Industry finished, the Indusrtial Revolution arrived. This transformed Newquay into a commodity port and dealt with the China clay, Lead and Tin Industries.

Because of It's location the North West coast of Cornwall, Newquay is an ideal base for it's Legend and History. Tintagel castle lies to the North East, where King Arthur held his court and Merlin woved his spells.

During the 17th and 18th centuries the Agriculture and Fishing Industries suffered low incomes, and were sometimes supplemented by smuggling. Also 'Wrecking' (made more famous by 'Jamaica Inn' by Daphne du Maurier). The Wreckers often used the small village of Crantock to hide their cargo.

Nowadays Newquay is famous for being the most popular and busiest holiday destination in Cornwall. It is also one of the most popular destinations for surfing in Europe.

The beaches around Newquay and the rest of Cornwall are probably amongst the best in the world. They have certainly played a major part in making Newquay one of the most popular surfing resorts in Europe.

The beaches at Newquay are all within easy access of the car parks in the centre of the town, and are extremely useful in the Summer months when the thousands of tourists arrive for their vacation.
