FOWEY
Fowey is situated on the Estuary of the river Fowey in Cornwall. The town and the area surrounding has a lot to offer tourists. The visitor can learn a lot about the local area by attendind a guided walk or by visiting the local museum. Also St Fimbarrus church, which was rebuilt in the fifteenth century, and located in the town centre is well worth a visit.
Situated under the town hall is Fowey Aquarium and is an excellent attraction
for all the family and is open all Summer. On the other side of the
harbour from Fowey lies the village of Polruan. This attractive little
village with many cottages has fantastic coastal views. St Catherine's
Point is situated at the entrance to the harbour in Fowey.
St Catherine's chapel stood at the top of the cliffs, and was used as a form of lighthouse back in the medieval times. The only building left now is the fort below, which was built during King Henry the eighth's reign, to protect the entrance to the harbour.
On each side of the harbour entrance, blockhouses were built in the late 14th century. A huge chain was hung in between these blockhouses to stop unwelcomed ships from entereing the harbour.
The blockhouse at Polruan can be accessed by foot. There are views of the blockhouse at Fowey from here, because there is no access to the blockhouse at Fowey.
