LAUNCESTON

Launceston is a town located in East Cornwall, United Kingdom. It lies about a mile from the River Tamar, near the Cornwall/Devon border, also known as the gateway to Cornwall.

Launceston is locate at the A30 main road through Cornwall. The road used to run through the town centre, but the traffic now travels via the dual carriageway bypass road South of launceston. The bypass road crosses the River Tamar over the Dunheved Bridge.

Launceston is about forty miles West of Exeter and twenty miles East of Bodmin. It lies about halfway between the North and South coasts of Cornwall.

Launceston is the main shopping centre and market town for the local rural areas of east Cornwall and West Devon. The area just outside Launceston have experienced rapid large business developments, But the centre of the town centre has lost a lot of business, with only a few small shops surviving.

Launceston is home to The Lawrence House Museum, which tells the story of the town's history, from the Bronze Age to World War II. Also the Norman Castle in Launceston, dominates the surrounding landscape, which stands on top of a large natural mound.

Launceston is still a major market centre, the rights to have these markets were among the privileges granted by Royal Charter.

The majority of the area that surrounds Launceston has experieced a lot of historical interest, and has many villages and hamlets set amid open fields. The area is a delight for many visitors and walkers, all the year round.
