MEVAGISSEY

Mevagissey is located about 6.5 miles(10.4km) South of St Austell on the South East coast of Cornwall. This pretty fishing village has a very interesting history.

Mevagissey lies in a valley near the middle of Mevagissey bay, and has outer and inner harbours. These harbours are very busy with both working fishing boats and pleasure boats.MEVAGISSEY The present harbour is was constructed in a medieval quay. The Inner harbour was built between the West and East Quays. Mevagissey was originally known as Porthilly, dating back to the fourteenth century. In the 1800,s it joined with Lamoreck. It was then re-named Mevagissey (after the irish saints St Issey and St Meva).

Around these times the wage earners were smuggling and Pilchard fishing. In the late nineteenth century, a power station was erected and Pilchard Oil provided the power.

Mevagissey became one of the first places in the UK to have lighting in the streets.

There are presentely over sixty working fishing boats and about seventy fisherman working these boats. There is a regular pleasure boat trip from Mevagissey to Fowey during the Summer months.

Mevagissey has park nicknamed 'Hitler's walk' named after a concillor who marched up and down the harbour looking after the moored boats Mevagissey harbour.

In June every year Mevagissey has Feast week celebrations, which seven days of dancing, music, general family fun, and finishes with a Carnival and a huge display of fireworks.
